March and Purim

The month of March heralds many things.  To name a few…the start of Spring, Daylight Savings Time, Spring Breaks, March Madness, Macon’s Cherry Blossom Festival and even National Goof Off Day. (Yes, that’s actually a “thing” on March 22nd! Who knew?!)

The Jewish holiday of Purim is also in March. Our Religious School youth (and adults in attendance) will have a unique and fun experience in a departure from our usual carnival routine on Sunday, March 20th. We will be hosting and participating in the dynamic “Bible Raps”.  What is it you ask? It is a fun and engaging way to involve Jewish youth in Torah-rich performances/video in schools, camps, Hillels and conferences.

The next event is our annual Purim Family Night on March 23rd. (Heads up: Rabbi Aaron has some fun things in store!)  We will also have a festive meal that evening and fulfill our obligation to read/hear the Megillah, the Purim story.  We also encourage all congregants to remember a theme central to this holiday which is giving (typically food) both to the needy and friends.

Earlier in the month, Sunday March 13th is a full day as well.  In the wee hours at 2 am that morning is the official start of Daylight Savings Time. So be sure and set your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed the the night before.  Next at 10:15 am at the synagogue, The Adult Education segment will present special programming focusing on End-of-Life issues.  From discussing the mourning rituals consistent with the Jewish faith, to learning the sacred honor of duties performed by the Chevra Kadisha Society, to useful information pertaining to the Cemetery, as well as basic knowledge regarding wills and related legal matters…there is sure to be something to enhance your own curiosity or understanding of these subjects. The atmosphere will be casual, relaxed and informative and even “Archie Bunker” will be part of the session, so now you have to attend to check it out!  Later that same day at 3 pm we wish Amitai Ilan mazel tov and congratulations on being an Eagle Scout Court of Honor recipient.

As Spring foliage soon begins to paint Macon with color, enjoy the scenery!  And… be sure to enjoy all the events this month at the synagogue in addition to weekly services.

Happy Spring and see ya around!
