Hi, I have the honor and pleasure of serving as the rabbi of Congregation Sha’arey Israel. My rabbinical studies began in L.A. at the University of Judaism, now called American Jewish University, in the mid-80s. I continued my studies in Jerusalem at Neve Schechter, and I completed them in NYC at the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1991. I am passionate about music; I play the accordion, keyboard, and melodica. I love being part of central Georgia’s music scene, and music and participatory singing are important to the spirit of our Shabbat services.
I love to share Torah, anywhere and with anyone I can – whether it’s preschoolers or seniors – through singing, learning synagogue skills like chanting Torah, leading prayers, or studying text.
Sharona, my wife, is a dancer who works with people of all ages. She also combines Occupational Therapy with dance and movement, bringing that combination to senior facilities across central Georgia. Additionally, I’m grateful to have Sharona join me in leading prayers on Shabbat. We have two adult children, Zohar and Maya.
I’m a big fan of mitzvah projects – finding ways big and small to make the world better. Danny Siegel, one of the great American tzedakah teachers, has been a key inspiration guiding my thoughts about community and creating opportunities for connection, building awareness, and fostering empathy to make a difference. My hobby obsession is crafting hot sauce. Beyond the fun of connecting with people who enjoy my creations, it’s really about publicizing various charitable causes – on the labels of the hot sauce I make. The goal is to educate and inspire folks to give, whether it’s something local, national, or global.
One last note – I initially served this synagogue from 1993 to 2005. Our family then moved to Memphis for eight years, and in 2013, the stars aligned to bring us back to this wonderful community. It’s been a great journey! I’m delighted to be back in this special kehilla.
