From Mourning into Consolation

As August begins, we observe Tisha B’av (Saturday evening, August 2 until Sunday evening, August 3), commemorating the destruction of the ancient holy Temples, along with a host of tragic events. And then — a dramatic shift unfolds right after the Fast day ends. Brady Kruger’s bar mitzvah haftarah (Saturday, August 9) opens with words of consolation: Nachamu, nachamu ami, yomar Eloheychem — “Take comfort, take comfort, My people, says your God.”

Short rabbinic tangent: I had the privilege of officiating at the bar mitzvah of Brady’s dad, Michael — 30 (!) years ago. My cup (of rejoicing) is full to the brim.

This prophetic selection is the first of seven, taking us to the threshold of a new year. Cumulatively, the tone is all about reconciliation. God will never abandon us. We share an eternal bond. The prophets assured our ancestors of God’s abiding love and care. Through the darkness and the sadness — we hold fast to hope and renewal. We remind ourselves and each other that we possess the power to plant seeds of blessing, to take the next step forward. Joy and light aren’t too far away. Take comfort!
